As reported recently in the Pueblo Chieftain, a 15-year-old Vilas girl was killed in a car accident in Baca County on April 9th, 2011. The single-vehicle crash ejected the girl, who died later at Swedish Hospital in Denver; the 17-year-old male driver was uninjured.
The car crash, in which excessive speed was said to be a factor, occurred on Baca County Road M about 7 miles east of U.S. 287, when the vehicle left the road and rolled over into a field. The accident started a 2000-acre wildfire northeast of Campo, which was later contained. Authorities indicated that charges are pending against the teen driver, including a citation for speeding.
According to accident statistics compiled by the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), during 2008, the latest year for which accurate crash data are available, excessive speed was a factor in approximately 20% of the more than 27,000 vehicle accidents statewide that year. As suggested by this tragic accident, teens and speeding can be a particularly deadly combination.
