According to the Gazette, a former Harvard graduate student from Colorado Springs, has been ordered to pay a $260,000 civil judgement after being convicted of manslaughter in 2003 for fatally stabbing a Cambridge man. His conviction was later overturned and he reached a deal to serve two years in prison after his second trial ended in a hung jury. He was found negligent in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of the victim and ordered to pay $520,000, a judgement later reduced to $260,000.
Have you or someone you know suffered a tragic loss due to the negligence of another? Contact a wrongful death law firm as soon as possible to discuss your options.
Civil actions are very different from criminal charges. In a criminal case, the victim of the crime cannot receive financial compensation from the defendant if the defendant is found guilty. In a civil case, the victim may pursue a separate action against the defendant for financial compensation. In a case such as this, a family who has suffered a tragic loss may choose to pursue compensation to ensure financial security for a child or spouse left behind.
