Pueblo and the surrounding metropolitan area are home to more than 160,000 residents. It is the primary city in the Front Range Urban Corridor and nestled beautifully along the Arkansas River and Fountain Creek. Just a quick 112 miles south of Denver, the city is one of the largest steel producers in the United States. It is also one of the least expensive places to live in the entire state and the sixth most affordable place to live in America. Yet, is it also one of the worst places to live in America?
A recent report by the New York-based 24/7 Wall Street ranked Pueblo, Colorado as one of the worst cities in America to live in. This was based on a variety of factors, such as crime, economy, job market, affordability, and education. It was the only Colorado city that was included in the rankings. Yet, local community officials disagree with this ranking and believe that Pueblo often gets a bad rap – despite the many positives in the community.
What the Report Says
According to the report, Pueblo has the lowest median household income of any city in the state with household earners making just $38,380 a year. One in four people in the community live below the poverty line. In addition, the violent crime in Pueblo is a major deterrent. It is the worst violent crime rate of any city in the state and it is nearly triple the state’s violent crime rate.
Local officials point to numerous benefits of living in Pueblo that didn’t affect the rankings, including a community spirit, low unemployment rate, and high labor participation rate. While they acknowledge that the violent crime rate is elevated, they believe this is due to how their police departments report incidents of crime. While there are certain more dangerous pockets of Pueblo, the community as a whole feel safer than other larger cities.
