A serious two vehicle accident north of Pueblo on Interstate 25, shut down the northbound lanes of the highway for four hours on Tuesday, January 28th.
A southbound Buick SUV, driven by Pueblo resident Regina Tarrow, lost control and crossed the median, drove through barriers and entered the northbound lanes of traffic.
According to troopers, the Buick then crashed into a northbound Volkswagen van. The van burst into flames and both vehicles went down the embankment of I-25.
Tragically, the driver of the Volkwagen van died in the accident, and at the time of this writing, their name has not yet been released. The driver of the Buick, Tarrow, had not been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, and was almost thrown from the vehicle.
After the accident, Tarrow was rushed to a local hospital, but then taken to a trauma center in Denver for treatment of serious life-threatening injuries.
The exact cause of the accident is being investigated, and according to Colorado State Patrol, alcohol and drugs may have been a factor, but they reported no further details.
Fatal Car Accidents Are Far Too Common
Fatal car accidents are disturbingly common. In fact, over 90 people die in vehicle accidents every single day in the United States. That’s almost 33,000 people every year, more than the population of many mid-sized towns. Another 3 million people are injured in accidents annually, with almost two thirds of those injuries being permanent.
Car accidents happen for any number of reasons, but some of the most common causes of car accidents are speeding and reckless driving, defective auto parts, distracted driving caused by smartphones, fatigue and driving under the influence. Driving under the influence of alcohol is actually responsible for 40% of all fatal accidents.
